Comparison Of Indian States And Cities And Countries By GDP 2018

Delhi Vs Pakistan

Let's start with an interesting fact. The GDP (nominal) of Delhi NCR alone is greater than the GDP (nominal) of whole Pakistan!! What!!!. Yup it's true.

$370 billion > $283.7 billion
  Delhi NCR         Pakistan

Comparison image Delhi NCR Vs Pakistan GDP
I added the image above to give you an idea of why this comparison blew my mind. The green dot you see in the image above is roughly the Delhi NCR region. Now compare that tiny green dot to Pakistan. Gross domestic produce of the green area alone is enough to beat Pakistan's GDP and it does not beat it by a small margin, that green dot's GDP is 1.3X of that of Pakistan's GDP. I have added a cropped image below to give a better idea.

Indian Cities Vs Countries

Indian CityGDP (PPP)Comparable Country
Mumbai$310 billionSingapore
Delhi$293.6 billionPakistan
Kolkata$150.1 billion> Hungary
Bengaluru$110 billion> Ukraine
Chennai$78.6 billion> Oman
Hyedrabad$75.2 billion> Oman
Pune$69 billion>Luxembourg
Ahemadabad$68 billion>Luxembourg
Surat$59.8 billion> Bulgaria
Vishakhapatnam$43.5 billion> Jordan

This data is just unbelievable! But it's true. Our highest producing cities produce more than some of the worlds very well known rich countries like Luxembourg, Oman and Singapore. Do you realize how awesome this is? Our cities, just cities have more GDP than whole freaking countries! These comparisons should give you a pretty good idea of how powerful our economy is. Now let's compare the GDP of our states with that of well known countries.

As you can see from the table above, the state with highest GDP is Maharashtra followed by Gujrat, Utter Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Honestly I was a little surprised to see Gujrat and Utter Pradesh make it to top three. Looks like Modi did a good job with Gujrat's economy after all. The state that surprised me the most in this list is Uttar Pradesh. I would have never guessed that UP has the third highest GDP in the country. I believe UP's high GDP is because of  it's massive population.

I was expecting Karnataka to be higher than 5th position. But, it's growing at a very fast rate relative to other states. The growth rate of Karnataka's GPD in 2016-2017 was an astounding 17%. Which is much higher than the growth rates of Maharashtra and Gujrat which are 11.8% and 13.3% respectively for the same financial year. At this growth rate, Karnataka would catch on and surpass these states in just a matter of few years.
